"Fans jostle to see Hanson"
The Herald Sun Newspaper - Melbourne
22nd March 2000

American teen sensations Hanson drew crowds to shame even the Queen during their only pubic appearance in Melbourne last night.

Quick thinking police averted a potential peak-hour traffic nightmare by cordoning off a side street outside FOX FM's St Kilda studios, where the trio were performing a short concert.

While only 200 competition winners were allowed on to the radio station's rooftop to see the four-song set, hundreds more disappointed fans crowded below, desperate to hear their heroes at the least, if not catch a glimpse of them.

Some fans had queued since 8am yesterday. Others had slept overnight at the airport, desperate to see the trio, and some had travelled from as far as Perth and Albury to see the band.

"Teen hysteria goes pop from the rooftop"
The Age Newspaper - Melbourne
March 22nd 2000

by Patrick Donovan

It could have been the Beatles playing their final show on the Abbey Road Studios rooftop in 1969. Hundreds of teenagers - mainly female - swarmed behind the barriers at the Fox FM entrance in St Kilda Road, wearing make-up, minis and platforms that belied their age and clutching banners, placards, cameras and balloons, just trying to catch a glimpse of Hanson.

The crowd was small compared to the 20,000+ who flooded Southland Shopping Centre last time the three American siblings were in Melbourne, but what they lacked in numbers was made up for in sheer hysteria and hype that only a pop group on a radio station's rooftop can muster.

As the lads munched on burgers and pizzas backstage, the throng chanted "Hanson, Hanson", and sang their songs in a similar high pitch to the recordings.

The band treated the crowd to five songs off their second album, This Time Around, which includes some very credible collaborations. The sound has been beefed up with harmonica and chunky guitars, and the youngsters now sing about lonely nights and infidelity.

On March 25, nearly 8,000 of the band's rabid army of fans packed Brisbane's Royal Botanic Gardens to see the boy band from Oklahoma perform their only Australian show. "The fans in Australia are amazing," says Taylor. True, at the Brisbane concert that ended a whirlwind promo tour of the eastern capitals for Hanson's new album, This Time Around (out on April 17), there were fewer than the memorable 25,000 who invaded Melbourne's Southland Shopping Centre to see a '97 gig, but, says Taylor, they were just as enthusiastic.

Throughout the performance, Taylor pleaded with the swarming, shrieking crowd to remain calm as security staff struggled to rescue fans suffering from heat exhaustion and over excitement.

"Hopefully you can have fans who will continue to be into the music and follow you along and enjoy the transition," says Taylor of the throng that jammed the Royal Botanic Gardens in Brisbane to hear the band.

Only 300 people are allowed into the 'House of Hits' studio, so it will be tears for the 200 or so who will be turned away, some of whom have travelled as far as Adelaide to be here tonight.

The film crew looks frazzled. They've just caught some girls who have managed to slip past security and into the studio for the last minute rehearsals. In the canteen, there's total chaos. The screaming throng have managed to trap most of the crew, who frantically radio colleagues on "the other side" for help.

The 'House of Hits' unit publicist Chrissie Camp says, "The difference with music shows is you can feel the excitement in the air. There's a real buzz." Buzz is an understatement. The girl's eyes are so fixed on the stage where Hanson will soon appear, they barely notice Molly creeping up and standing right behind them. He laughs and runs behind the stage.

Minutes later, Hanson are introduced, bounding onto the stage to perform their single 'If Only'. The screams are deafening, and the girls are going wild. And you can see why. Taylor, the obvious favourite, has got it. He's beautiful.
