Chapter 2: Freak Out

Maddy came to and found herself laying on her side in a horrible position. She rolled over and screamed out as her body regenerated the broken bones and ruptured organs. Soon, her body had healed itself and left her alert save for her foggy eyesight. As the fog in her eyes cleared, Maddy saw the wreck on the side of the road. Immediately, she knew it had to have been the car she’d slammed in to. She rolled over and scrambled to her feet. “Oh shit,” she breathed as she ran over to the car.

Guilt-stricken, Maddy stopped at the driver’s side of the Subaru. She saw Isaac in poor conditions, and she felt sick to her stomach; she’d caused the wreck before because she couldn’t wait a few more minutes to get out of the woods, and she’d just stood there once she had gotten out. “What have I done,” she whispered as she pulled at the car door. It was too smashed to open, so Maddy used her superhuman-like strength to pull the door off of its frame.

The door snapped like a twig, and Maddy threw it aside like it was a pebble. Her tall frame leaned against the roughed-up Subaru and stared closely at Isaac. She was not around humans often, but she knew that the one before her was not breathing like he should. Assessing the laceration made by the seatbelt, Maddy realized the safety harness had caused as many problems as it had solved. She was positive that the belt had cracked several of Isaac’s ribs and caused them to puncture his lungs. Maddy knew that meant death if not treated, and she also knew that it was miles and miles away from a hospital. There wasn’t enough time to get an ambulance down to save Isaac, so Maddy acted purely upon instinct.

Maddy tapped at her wrist to widen her blood veins, and she brought her wrist up to her mouth. She glanced up at the sky and saw that the moon was showing through a tad bit. Maddy didn’t need the moon’s presence to perform the transformations, but it made her more steady. Her teeth elongated and came to a sharp point as her eyes turned from a caramel color to all black except for blue where the pupil was. She bit down into her wrist to draw blood, and she applied pressure to the wrist until it began to drip with blood. She had to hurry or her body would seal the cut back up before she did any good with her blood.

Maddy hunched up the best she could to fit into the Subaru. Her back was as far against the steering wheel as it could be. She gingerly pulled the dress shirt away from Isaac’s chest so that she could drip her blood into his fresh cut. She squeezed her wrist harder so that the blood would gush out. Her face was contorted from the stinging from the gash she’d made in her wrist.

A cold breeze stirred as a shorter female figure clad in black appeared behind Maddy, who knew someone was there without having to turn around and see. She didn’t have time for the vampire behind her since she had to save a mortal’s life. A chill ran down her spine as the vampire stepped closer to inspect what was going on. “Are you going to turn him,” the vampire gasped out the question.

Maddy shook her head but never took her eyes off of what she was doing. “No, I’m saving his life, Angelina.”

Angelina snorted angrily and shook her head. “Damn, you’re never any fun. But then again, few wolves are.”

Maddy growled, but let the rash comment slide. “Say what you want, Angelina, but werewolf blood heals mortals just as quickly as it heals werewolves. This one really needs it because death’s grip is creeping upon him.”

Angelina rolled her aquamarine eyes. “Such a shame,” she said sarcastically. She walked over and touched Maddy’s shoulder. “Listen, humans die. It’s our job as immortals to take their lives, and there’s plenty to take. Hell, they’re overpopulating their world anyway, so why not?”

Maddy glanced over at the vampire beside her. Angelina was five-foot-six and slim as she could be. Her originally jet black hair was interrupted with bleached out highlights everywhere. Her makeup threw her facial features off balance because her skin was so pale against the jet black eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara, and lipstick. Angelina was dressed in a black satin camisole with a long, black, cotton skirt accented with tap shoes and gray knee socks. “This wreck was my fault. I was being chased.”

Angelina nodded. “Yea, I heard about the hunters coming for you. So, whatdya do?”

Maddy rolled her eyes. “Nothing. I did nothing but be a werewolf in the woods. Now, I’m running from assassins to immortals.”

Angelina laughed. “That sounds funny. Immortals having assassins. Too bad it’s the truth. I die with a stake through the heart,” she made the gesture of having a stake driven into her heart, “while you die by the aid of a silver weapon.”

Maddy began to ignore the vampire, and focused on watching the laceration on Isaac’s chest. It seemed to be healing from her blood, and that was a relief. Maddy noticed movement out of the corner of her eye and saw Angelina in the passenger seat lulling over Zac. The cut on his head tantalized her, and Maddy stopped Angelina before she could act upon her vampire instincts to latch onto a human’s neck and drain their blood.

Maddy grabbed Angelina by the neck and received an angered hiss in response. “Leave them alone, Angelina.” Maddy growled.

Angelina wiggled out of Maddy’s grip and disappeared, or seemed to. All Angelina did was use her extraordinary speed to zoom out of the car. “I don’t’ have to listen to you, wolf.” Angelina said. “I can come back any time I want and kill them. Oh, and that human there is going to die anyway. It’s inevitable, you’re blood will kill him soon enough.” With a angry turn, Angelina was gone.

Maddy sighed out of relief and pulled out a cell phone that she carried. She dialed 9-1-1. “I need to report an accident. I was in the woods…”she had to think up a good lie, “studying owl habits when I heard a loud crash. I walked out and found a car and a van crashed in the ditch on…uh…Maple drive.” Maddy had pretended to look for a sign, but she knew the road by heart because it used to be her favorite place to walk until hunters were sent after her.
