Install Questions

Q: How do I unzip these files?

A: You'll need to download a program like WinZip.
There should be instructions on the WinZip site.

Q: Will other unzipping programs work?

A: Yes, anything that will unzip files will work.
Some other suggested programs are SimsZip,
and Windows Commander.

A: Unzip to the following game folders:

Skins (heads and bodies) - C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\GameData\Skins

Objects (paintings, etc) - C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\Downloads

Textures (newspaper, book) - C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\GameData\Textures

Tech Support

Official Support

Q: Help! My game is crashing!

A: The likely cause is from not adding all or missing some files in
the Skins folder. To check this, first try File Cop.
If you can't get File Cop from the official site, you can get it from TSR.

Q: Why are visitors disappearing and/or my carpool
doesn't show up?

A: You could be missing pedestrian/car portals, or
your mailbox and trash can. You can get replacements here:
SimsPlus, TSR, Slink's Burrow

Q: My objects disappear when I go from buy to live mode!

A: Many objects require having an expansion pack in order
to show up. If you're missing the expansion, the object may
disappear when changing modes, or come up with "missing animation"*
*(some missing animation notices may come from having duplicate
objects with the same .iff file name)

Q: Why does only part of an object show/not show?

A: This could be an object conflict. When you have downloads
from many places, you may find some that have the same iff
file name or number. You can check for conflicts using a
program like EliSims, or use a program to add
numbers, such as Object ID.

Q: Why does my music skip?

A: If you have a lot of downloads and music files in your game,
your system may not be able to handle it. One thing you can
try is moving the MP3 files you've added out of your game
folders, and then go into "My Computer". From there, click
down to where you stored the MP3 and right click the file,
then choose to copy a shortcut. Then go into C:\Program Files\
Maxis\The Sims\Music (and folder from there) and paste the
shortcut. This is also how MP3 files are installed originally.

Make Stuff!

Q: How do you make skins/objects, etc?

A: Check my links page for just a few programs and
tutorials. For skins specifically, I recommend SimSkinners.
